Butterflies were the inspiration for both the playground and overall site design at Pu’ohala Elementary School in Kaneohe, HI. The LevelUp 1.2 was transformed into a celebration of different types of butterflies as shown in shade fabric, panel enclosures and sides of the slide. The energetic color scheme includes Traffic Orange, Zinc Yellow, Water Blue, Cosmo Yellow and Yellow Green on the central structure plus the O’Tannebaum2.5. This combination of elements allows for spinning, climbing, balancing, sliding, musical play, and social engagement for 2-5 year olds in only 1200 square feet. The Hawaii Department of Education carried the theme to a living butterfly garden adjacent to the playground and the entire project was completed in 2024.
